Learning Beyond the Classroom: An Educational Excursion into the World of Biodiversity
Education becomes truly meaningful when students get the opportunity to experience knowledge beyond textbooks and classrooms. With this vision, New Hardwick Indian School (CBSE), Magadi Road, Bengaluru, organised an educational excursion that introduced students to the fascinating world of botany, zoology, biodiversity, and scientific discovery.

“When students step beyond the classroom and experience nature firsthand, curiosity becomes knowledge and observation becomes discovery.”
The excursion was closely connected with the students' Biodiversity Register project, transforming classroom learning into a memorable real-world experience. Throughout the visit, students observed specimens, explored plants, listened to expert explanations, and developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity of life around them.

🌿 Discovering the World of Botany
The educational journey began with a visit to the Department of Botany and its Botany Museum. Students were introduced to an impressive collection of preserved botanical specimens, offering them an opportunity to observe the incredible diversity of the plant kingdom.
The museum featured fascinating specimens including different types of cones, algae, and other preserved plant materials. Seeing these specimens first-hand helped students understand concepts that they had previously encountered only through textbooks and classroom discussions.
One of the major attractions for the students was the old recording microscope. The historic scientific instrument captured their curiosity and provided an interesting perspective on how scientific observation and research techniques have developed over the years.
The visit encouraged students to appreciate not only the beauty of plants but also the importance of preserving botanical specimens for education, scientific research, and future generations.
🌳 Exploring the Botany Department Garden
The learning experience continued outdoors as students explored the Botany Department Garden. Surrounded by greenery, the students observed a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and plants while learning about their characteristics and significance.
Among the highlights were the lake, sandalwood tree, Rudraksha tree, bay leaf tree, and cinnamon tree. The students were particularly interested in learning about the connection between bay leaves and cinnamon.
The garden exploration demonstrated how biodiversity can be observed in our everyday surroundings. Rather than simply reading about different plants, students were able to see, identify, compare, and understand them in their natural environment.
The experience also encouraged students to become more observant of the plants and trees they encounter in their own surroundings.
🐾 A Fascinating Journey Through Zoology
The next stop was the Department of Zoology and Zoology Museum, where the students were warmly welcomed.
The museum offered an impressive collection of preserved zoological specimens and remains, allowing students to explore the diversity of the animal kingdom. Each specimen provided an opportunity to learn about different organisms, their characteristics, adaptations, and scientific importance.
The experience became even more enriching when a professor joined the students and explained the specimens in detail. Through engaging explanations and fascinating observations, students gained a better understanding of animal diversity, evolution, adaptation, and the importance of scientific study.
What initially appeared to be a collection of preserved specimens soon became a fascinating journey through the story of life on Earth. The students listened with curiosity as scientific facts and explanations transformed each specimen into an opportunity for discovery.
🔬 From Observation to Understanding
One of the most valuable aspects of the excursion was the opportunity for students to observe science in the real world.
The visit demonstrated that learning is not limited to classrooms, textbooks, or examinations. Museums, gardens, laboratories, and natural environments can all become powerful learning spaces.
The students were able to:
Observe preserved botanical and zoological specimens.
Identify different plants and trees.
Understand the importance of biodiversity.
Learn about scientific instruments and research.
Connect classroom concepts with real-world observations.
Develop curiosity about nature and scientific discovery.
Appreciate the importance of preserving biodiversity.
Connecting the Excursion with the Biodiversity Register
The excursion provided valuable support for the students' Biodiversity Register project. By directly observing plants, trees, and biological specimens, students were able to understand the importance of documenting and preserving biodiversity.
The experience encouraged them to look at their surroundings with greater curiosity and recognise that biodiversity exists all around us.
For the students of New Hardwick Indian School, the excursion was therefore more than simply a visit to museums. It was an opportunity to observe, explore, document, question, and learn.
🎓 A Day of Discovery and Learning
As the educational excursion came to an end, students returned with new knowledge, fascinating observations, and plenty of questions and memories.
The visit successfully transformed the Biodiversity Register project from a classroom activity into a meaningful real-world learning experience. Every specimen, plant, tree, and scientific explanation added another layer to the students' understanding of the natural world.
New Hardwick Indian School, such educational excursions reflect the importance of providing students with experiential learning opportunities that nurture curiosity, scientific thinking, observation skills, and environmental awareness.
It was truly a day where learning met discovery, and curiosity opened the door to a deeper understanding of biodiversity.
